Description

Upon finishing 'A is for Alibi', narrated on audiobook by Mary Peiffer, I'm happy to say that I enjoyed this first book in the series as much as when I read it in 1982.

She is hired by Nikki Fife, the convicted murdered of Lawrence Fife (her husband), to find out who really killed him. Enter Robert Dietz, a burnt-out detective, "late forties, five ten, maybe 170, [who arrives in] jeans, cowboy boots, a tweed sport coat with a blue toothbrush protruding from the breast pocket like a ballpoint pen. One might wonder why Nikki got only eight years for a premeditated murder, but this is never explained.

In California, as in many states, the only grounds for divorce are irreconcilable differences or incurable insanity, which eliminates the trumped-up adultery charges that were the mainstay of divorce attorneys and private eyes in the old days. A slick divorce attorney with a reputation for ruthlessness, Fife was also rumoured to be a slippery ladies’ man.

At first I thought maybe I would try reading a couple of her books before I made a decision, but I don't think I could make it through another book of this caliber. Eight years later and out on parole, Nikki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her husband. Alas, LJ's reviewer was equally unenthusiastic in an April 1, 1982, review, waving the book aside as "nothing to take it out of the ordinary. I had tossed the manila folder full of clippings on the passenger seat but I really didn’t need to look at them.

Books in her alphabet series, begun in 1982, are international bestsellers with readership in the millions. The trail may have gone cold, but the small town of Santa Teresa, described as a 'haven for the rich', still has answers. Because Nikki had been convicted by a jury who purportedly weighed the evidence presented by both the prosecuting and defense attorneys, she wasn't expecting to discover any new evidence. She interviewed and reinterviewed Laurence's ex-wife Gwen and their two grown children, Greg and Diane; Laurence's former business partner and colleague, Charlie Scorsoni; Laurence's former secretary, Sharon Rapier and of course, she also tracked down and interviewed Libby Glass's family and colleagues, including her emotionally devastated parents and her rude and bad-tempered ex-boyfriend Lyle.
