But as they work to uncover the truth, they begin to wonder just how far someone will go to silence this poison pen? His plays have been produced in theatres across the UK as well as for radio, the most recent being Trust, starring Julie Hesmondhalgh on BBC Radio 4. Boilers, almost-suicide, divorce, past relationships and nasty threats are all uncovered throughout the pages. They each had their own stories outside of the mystery and I liked how this was shown to intertwine with each other.

The background story of this and the previous book was very good but I felt the characters lacked depth. Sometimes she wanted her husband of thirty-three years to clap her cheerfully on the back and say words to the effect of: My darling - knock the world dead! I also liked how he included topics such as schools turning into businesses, which made you really think. Only this time, instead of an unexpected death it is a series of threatening poison pen letters that are disturbing the peace at their local school, which is under new management.I would have liked to have a little more backstory and duscussion of the main characters to make more of a story maybe you need to read the first but i thought i was missing bits of characters. I liked the premises of the three retired friends turning into wannabe Miss Marple’s trying to project the school they so loved but the first half of the book did drag a little for me. As delightful as it is deadly , A Pen Dipped in Poison is a feel-good, fun and fabulous cosy mystery that had me utterly gripped from page one . I haven’t actually read the first book (it's on my tbr tho) but I enjoyed this cosy mystery and I loved our three main characters Liz, Pat and Thelma. A gently quirky cosy mystery with plenty of twists and turns, and an intriguing cast of characters ? I have to admit, I got a little bit confused at the start of the book between Linda and Liz, Pat and Jan, but I soon got them all straightened out as the story (and characters) developed. Sadly though once we learnt that White Letters were being received by various people , it took so long to actually get going it ,it actually sent me to sleep in several sections .The second instalment in this lovely cosy mystery series, centred around a group of retired primary school teachers, and imbued with admiration for their motivation, resourcefulness and capability. The ladies end up helping out at the school in different capacities while they try to discover who the author of the letters could possibly be.

But as they work to uncover the truth, they begin to wonder just how far someone will go to silence this poison pen. I haven't read the previous book by this author and found that there were a lot of characters to keep track of and I found the 3 main characters were not particularly different and or interesting. This was an ok cosy mystery with so many characters that is became overwhelming at times trying to keep track.

As I haven't read the first book in the series, I was happy to see some backstory to the characters. I would read an other by this author and possibly go back and read the first in the series to get a better idea of our former teachers but I was slightly disappointed in the pacing of this one. I don’t feel it works particularly well as a standalone book as there are a lot of references to the first book, A Spoonful of Murder, so it helps to have read that book first. The book desperately needs a proper edit, in particular the spelling mistakes and inconsistencies, of which there are plenty. Retired schoolteachers and amateur sleuths Liz, Pat and Thelma have a brand-new mystery to solve in this witty tale.
