He tries to hack it with a knife, but when the judge bursts in, he finds that Peter has severed his own hand.

We get a chance to know the characters more and what motivated them and it all makes a lot more sense now. Outside of his television work, he makes and sells his own darkly folkloric artwork, often lino cut and hand-printed. It’s easy to compare Blood on Satan’s Claw to some of the classics — for example Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The violence, especially the scene where a young woman is raped and murdered, is easier to ingest on the printed page than film, but never the less may make this book a work to be avoided for some. Haggard adopted a "painterly" style for the film, marked by low camera angles that cast the actors on high landscapes against open skies.I haven't seen the film this book is based on, but the book itself is a great tale of devil worship and general folk horror madness from the 17th century. The narrative justification does not make sense, nor does the true motivation for why the person most capable of stopping it choses not to. Much like Blood on Satan’s Claw the film has become synonymous with the Folk Horror movement and has achieved a similar status as a classic of the genre.
