Both women collaborated on the text and the visuals, which star Demie as various elves, mermaids, fairies, and other make-believe creatures in surrealist sets that blend reality and fantasy. The photos combine elements of camp, prosthetics, and shibari in a surreal update to the imagery of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Perrault, and others. this is definitely a prized possession and i will forever be changed after witnessing it in all her glory.

honestly 4/5 stars still for the absolutely ethereal and fantastical photography but 0/5 for any words written on any page in this “erotic” book. The darker European folklorists, from Charles Perrault to Hans Christian Andersen, spun stories with little resemblance to the Disney-sanitized versions we grew up on: The queen in Snow White wished to devour the girl’s lungs and liver, for example, and the evil stepsisters in Cinderella cut off their toes with a knife to fit into the glass slipper. So I bought this for the photos (I would assume that many of us did lol) and I did not expect the writing to be that great… and I was correct. For Alexa and I, doing this book of fairy tales was almost the most accurate reflection of the world around us today. You approach them with innocence, and you revisit them as an adult and realize there’s more going on.

Fairy Tales is] a collaboration with the photographer Petra Collins -- a body of work that reimagines the female creatures who inhabit folk- and fairy-tales, who are often cast as one-dimensional monsters or temptresses.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The stories by themselves are quite one-dimensional, but completely come to life with the photography. I loved every chapter of this book, and what stuck with me were the themes of being okay being alone, as well as sexuality and sensuality for the purpose of womens joy.Subconsciously, those kinds of scary folk tales and the magical, sweet fairy tales that I grew up reading meshed together on this project, which was so perfect with Petra—she loves that aesthetic of blending something beautiful with something a little ugly or sexy or even terrifying. Instead of glimpsing each other across a crowded room, they connected as any good millennials with a mutual admiration of each other’s work would: through a DM on Instagram. Retelling childhood stories, Petra Collins and Alexa Demie play with juxtaposition: dark and light, violence and kindness, delicacy and tension.
