It's partly a sense of being kept at arms length from him, that puzzles me but perhaps it's a metaphor for his dissociation with his past?

If you have ever been to any of the islands you'll know what I mean when I say it's impossible not to be affected by the beauty all around. Though the plotting is very precise, even the moment when hunter and quarry coincidentally and unwittingly cross paths didn’t feel contrived: it just added to the evidence (shared eventually by at least one of Lacroix’s pursuers) that they are not really seeking a legible or reasonable form of justice but are carrying out a more arbitrary exercise of power, playing their parts in a game none of them can ever really win because those who made the rules don’t care who they really are–or who they could be, if they were free to choose. A sense of menace permeates the novel and there is a perfectly odious villain, but Miller does offset this with some lightness and humor mixed into his tale. Miller’s latest novel is a compelling read and an important literary achievement, not least because it does just this. The Green Transition Weekly analysis of the shift to a new economy from the New Statesman's Spotlight on Policy team. I became aware of this book through the November 11, 2019 issue of the New Yorker in its Briefly Noted section.

I would want you to come at this book, if you decide to put it on your TBR list, with the knowledge that it has received favorable reviews (see below for some links), and then take it from there and read away. If you’re looking for a good story after the Booker baker’s dozen of finest fiction, Andrew Miller’s Now We Shall Be Entirely Free awaits you. Furthermore, if those who decide the allocations of the real and unreal are cruel, mad or colossally wrong, what then? Now We Shall Be Entirely Free is a historical novel, but it is also many other things - a war novel, a romance, an adventure story, a cat and mouse chase, a story of friendship. He fills his novel with vividly etched characters and has a way with words that delights, surprises and enthrals. The yellow and the white, the gold and the red, so that he seemed to be looking across a field of small lights afloat on the shallow water of morning shadow.

As they play guitars, take laudanum and drag their mattresses outside, the story looks like it might become a cross between The Wicker Man and a 19th-century stoner comedy. Historical fiction should have something to say about the present, and this does, yes, for in our age there are still atrocities that take place under the cover of war and shouldn't the perpetrators be held accountable? They were beautiful–more so than he had prepared himself for, and it comforted him a little that he had had the sense to find them, the world’s scattered edge, that there was in him, perhaps, some trace of a wisdom that could guide his actions. A curious and compelling story, that questions how people are to navigate through turbulent emotions following a traumatic experiences, grief and self reproach - to then find a sense of direction in their lives. No one can travel incognito - there are few enough people in this chill shadowy world that our flawed hero, John Lacroix, finds it almost impossible to hide as he is pursued by a brutalised youthful killer and his sophisticated Spanish sidekick. There is a villain but one gets acquainted with this villain’s childhood, and…well I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to include any spoilers about this book. This is a powerful, moving and magnificent novel, that certainly deserves to be read by a wide audience. Until the final page it seemed any number of endings were possible, that his characters still had chances and choices.
