I know I have read this more times than I have dates for, so this mayn't be surprising, but I wanted there to be more variety. Mistoffelees, Macavity, the Mystery Cat,Asparagus, Bustopher Jones, the man about town, and Skimbleshanks, the railway cat. I especially loved “The Rum Tum Tugger,” about a contrary cat who always wants what he can’t have and never wants what he’s offered: “When you let him in, then he wants to be out; / He’s always on the wrong side of every door.

He settled in England in 1915, where for a few years he worked in the foreign section of Lloyds Bank. Scheffler's illustrations are kid-friendly but yet they don't condescend or become overly cute and childish. But the paper is crappy and discolored, and often the illustrations are back-to-back, so I'd probably get bleed through too.The poems themselves are of course classics but Axel Scheffler's beautiful (and funny) illustrations are what will make children treasure this book and demand that it be read and re-read.

I did however change one of the words describing some Siamese cats ('Chinks') which is not a word I'd want my grandchildren to use! Admittedly the hyper-sexualisation of Eliot’s text is eyebrow-raising, and means this is certainly no Pixar movie. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry. I was very young and not a fan at poetry at all when I went to see it first and it wasn't until a friend told me recently that I even knew this book existed.

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) wrote and illustrated such popular books as The Doubtful Guest, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, and The Headless Bust. A algunos les causó extrañeza que Eliot, censurado por algunos poemas, escribiese algo para niños, pero , claro, un gato tiene más de un nombre.

The British rock band Mungo Jerry derived their name from the book's poem " Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer". They are delightful poetry in their own right with varied use of language and phrasing and poetic devices. The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have three different names.S. Eliot’s beloved cat poems Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, containing beautiful original colour illustrations by Axel Scheffler. S. Eliot and now with lively illustrations by Rebecca Ashdown, in a brand new edition of the classic poetry collection that inspired the musical Cats ! I've never seen Cats but from my understanding Eliot's poetry is heavily utilized in the musical, both as character and lyrics. This is a gorgeous book and the full colour illustrations by Axel Scheiffer are what distinguishes this volume from every other Possum's.
