This applies whether they are using a cycle lane, a cycle track, or riding ahead on the road and you should give way to them. Eager to showcase my knowledge of traffic signs and road etiquette, I decided to bring the Highway Code to the dinner table. Rules for motorways, including rules for signals, joining the motorway, driving on the motorway, lane discipline, overtaking, stopping and leaving the motorway. Knowing and applying the rules contained in The Highway Code could significantly reduce road casualties.

Horse riders should also give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing, and to pedestrians and cyclists on a parallel crossing. The changes follow a public consultation on a review of The Highway Code to improve road safety for people walking, cycling and riding horses. The code already explained that people cycling, riding a horse and driving a horse-drawn vehicle may stay in the left-hand lane of a roundabout when they intend to continue across or around the roundabout.

The hierarchy places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. My brother got fined for going in the bus channel so older drivers need to keep alert to these changes. Signals, stopping procedures, lighting, control of the vehicle, speed limits, stopping distances, lines and lane markings and multi-lane carriageways, smoking, mobile phones and sat nav. The AA has an excellent track record with driving test titles and is the biggest seller of books in the genre after the Driving Standards Agency.

The Official Highway Code is essential reading for all road users in England, Scotland and Wales, providing all the latest rules of the road and traffic signs. Many of the rules in the code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you’re committing a criminal offence. The code has been updated to clarify that when turning into or out of a side road, people cycling should give way to people walking who are crossing or waiting to cross. A self-driving vehicle’s ability to drive itself may be limited to certain situations or parts of a journey. This edition also includes the latest guidance on Self-driving Vehicles which was issued on 1 July 2022. You MUST be fit to drive (for example, you must be within the drink-drive legal limits and not be under the influence of drugs). Simply pick a card at random, (or get someone to test you), and work towards passing your car theory test. Improve your driving standard and stay safe on the road with this comprehensive guide to traffic regulations and laws. Every body who drives on our roads should read this booklet ,and also those intending to drive on our roads .

This includes positioning themselves in the centre of their chosen lane, where they feel able to do this safely. Keep safe, make sure you are up-to-date with all the latest rules of the road, and avoid penalties and fines by getting your copy of The Official Highway Code, which is seeing one of it's biggest overhauls with new rules coming into force. It also has handy tips to keep new drivers safe in the first 12 months after removing their L-plates. I'm now so busy decoding signals and road signs that I've had to hire a personal assistant to keep up.
