Monster is an absolute page turner — once it gets going, it never slows down and holds your attention until the very last page. However, that boy grows up to me a major serial killer as he goes through his childhood and teen years. When I stopped expecting a realistic gritty crime-noir drama (which is what I initially and wrongfully expected from it), I started to enjoy the book for what it is — a really entertaining and well-crafted pulpy action/thriller.

Suddenly, Junkers starts screaming and Tenma repels Lunge from further questions, considering it a disturbance. Later, Tenma tells Inspector Lunge about Johan and how he killed the three doctors at the Eisler Memorial Hospital and Junkers. News appear on TV about the current stable condition of Rosenbach and press conference held by Udo Heinemann (Tenma's director) and the news of the Liebert family who fled from East Germany to Dusseldorf. He followed his heart to move to Germany after reading a medical paper written by the current director of the hospital, and while he's a very kind and wise doctor, he's polite enough to say he's still got a long way to go. The books run “backwards,” and the conventions and visual “language” are different from American and European comics (although more and more non-Japanese creators are picking up on manga’s storytelling techniques). The main character is very sympathetic, though, and the main villain (a serial killer) is scary and interesting at the same time. Monster was Urasawa's first work to receive international acclaim and success; the manga has sold over 20 million copies, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

Along the way, he meets Eva, a girl whose life has been shattered by Johan's actions, and becomes determined to protect her from harm. Read Harder Challenge 2023: Read a graphic novel/comic/manga if you haven’t before; or read one that is a different genre than you normally read. And what would you do if that one crucial misstep in your career ended up working out for the better. The Young Adult Library Services Association placed Monster on their 2007 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. I have read this entire comic from start to finish several times now and honestly, this is a very extensive, complex, multi-layered story with many, MANY unique and memorable characters, shocking twists and turns, lots of storylines and mysteries, deep themes, morals, and ideas, and several other elements.I ovog ima puno, devet ovakvih u narodu poznatih voLJuma od četristo-petsto stranica, a moj novčanik hropće li hropće. Just like any good doctor, he puts the life of his patients first and foremost, and he deeply believes that every life has equal value.

From there, I checked out the series and fell in love with it back in 8th grade and followed it to the very end as new volumes came out. Naoki Urasawa's career as a manga artist spans more than twenty years and has firmly established him as one of the true manga masters of Japan. He commented that even the stories and characters that had felt unrelated to the greater picture are "eventually drawn together by Johan's grand plan. Urasawa has a gripping, clever crime thriller to tell, and you're going to want to be with it every step of the way. Volume 1: Doktor Tenma is the first volume of the manga and was released on 30 June 1995 in Japan, several months after being serialized in "Big Comic Original" magazine.

Following the trail to the construction site of a half-finished building near the hospital, Tenma finds Junkers held at gunpoint. Throughout the series, Tenma faces numerous obstacles and adversaries who are determined to keep Johan's secrets hidden. As soon as the killer aspect kicked in, I forgot all about that and started to enjoy quite a thrilling ride of mind games, unexpected twists, traps and turns. With the original team, there were a couple of mistakes in the volumes, like empty word balloons and mistaken identity of a character’s gender. So when the hospital try to force him to operate on the town mayor, suffering from a stroke, rather than a little boy who's been shot in the head, he follows his heart and saves the life of little Johan Liebert.
