Cooper, who left the BBC in 2020, sees Later… as part of a BBC tradition of music-making going back to the 1960s and Late Night Line-Up via The Old Grey Whistle Test. There are also some really good pieces written by artists who regularly appeared on the show, (including k. But there’s always been plenty of mayhem alongside the magic of convening a room full of musicians hosted by one of their own.

This first-hand account of the BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland takes you behind the scenes of one of the world’s great musical meeting places.

About the Author: Mark Cooper is the co-creator and founding producer of Later… with Jools Holland and the Annual Hootenanny, booking and shaping both for 26 years without missing a single recording. You never knew what you were going to be confronted with when you went on Later Nick CaveLater is a voyage of discovery for us as well as the viewers Dave Grohl Dave Grohl and Alicia Keys loved it, Bjoerk treasured it, Ed Sheerans life was changed by it, Kano felt at home while Nick Cave was horrified but inspired, and they all kept coming back. Written by the show’s co-creator and 26-year showrunner, music journalist Mark Cooper, this is the story of how Later? From Stormzy to Björk, from Smokey Robinson to Norah Jones, from Britpop to trip hop, here is the word on how Later? It is an engaging book, regardless of your music taste, and makes me want to go back and find some of those earlier episodes that I'm not old enough to have seen in the early days of the show.

It was a joy to share tales of the likes of Iggy Pop, Seasick Steve and Adele on the studio floor of the legendary Later …with Jools Holland show to a keen crowd at the equally legendary Dimbola. Great to talk about these ground-breaking artists in a house dedicated to the legacy of both the great Isle of Wight festivals and Julia Margaret Cameron. You get a good feel for how much Jools, the author and the rest of the programme's staff really love all sorts of music and want to share that with the viewers. This first-hand account, written by the show’s co-creator, music journalist Mark Cooper, tells the story of how the show grew into a musical and TV institution.
